Childhood portrait of Eline Mets wearing a blue sweater

Eline’s Realm

Everything I build is connected. I do not see my creations as disjointed links or chaotic bursts. They’re all emerging from one source, me. And therefore they are coherent.

I don’t see the world or time as linear. I remember forward and backwards. Uncovering the greater architecture, which is still and ever evolving.

Whenever I have tried to explain, the world has not been ready for it. And there hasn’t been any words or comparable architecture to help understand it. So I’d rather just show you.

ORIGINS

My experience on Earth has been shaped a lot by my grandmother, Salme Leiman, who was born in an Estonian village near Velikiyke Luki on December 18, 1915. Later on, she survived 15 years of incomprehensible hardship as a prisoner after being deported to a Siberian Gulag by the Soviet Regime.

Two of my other grandparents were also Estonian war prisoners in Siberia simply due to their nationality of being Estonian. So the throughline of a stolen life, stolen future and even stolen birthdays (my grandmother’s records were altered and she lost her true birthday, eventually becoming stateless after Estonia’s independence simply due to being born on the wrong side of the border) is also something I have come here to overwrite.

They were all badasses though and I’m sure they don’t want to be remembered or identified through their hardships alone. They had farms, drove tractors and lived their lives by rising above the things they had to survive, having happy days and arguments and hopes and dreams. And thanks to their survival, I am here.

I am a first generation Estonian Canadian. I am the one who immigrated, who was actually able to complete the journey my ancestors started.*

I am the one to help other people complete their journeys and tell their stories.

I am the one to be able to tell mine.

And I do not take this privilege or mission lightly.
